When planning the destination for your next travel nursing assignment, there are a few reasons the Hoosier State should be near the top of your list. Indiana can provide benefits for travel nurses both inside and outside the facility; let’s dive into some of the top things to consider now.

1. Travel nurses in Indiana, on average, take home 10–30% more than their permanent counterparts

Indiana is typically on par (or in many cases, slightly above) the national average in terms of travel nurse pay. It’s important to keep in mind that nurses can land between, below, or above the range outlined above based on their specialty and location within the state.

2. Indiana is home to many traveler-friendly facilities

Based on the experience of our Indiana-focused recruiters, most facilities in the Hoosier State are very willing to help travel nurses feel comfortable within their units; in many cases, they go as far as making travelers feel like actual staff employees. This will of course vary from facility to facility, but “Hoosier hospitality” appears to be alive and well within Indiana’s healthcare system. What’s more, many of Indiana’s hospitals have been recognized with Magnet status.

3. Indiana has entertainment options for nearly every interest

Looking for a cultural deep-dive? Try downtown Indianapolis, home to the Eiteljorg Museum and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. More of an outdoors person? Fall hiking in Brown County will provide breathtaking views, while biking the Monon Trail can be a great way to exercise and, in some cases, commute. Indiana is perhaps best know for it’s sports culture. On the professional stage, the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts and NBA’s Indiana Pacers compete throughout the fall and winter. College basketball in the state may be the biggest attraction, with the Indiana Hoosiers, Purdue Boilermakers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Butler Bulldogs consistently competing for NCAA Tournament berths. And of course, we have to mention the world-famous Indy 500, held annually at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

4. On average, housing costs in Indiana are 27% lower than the rest of the country

Despite the plethora of entertainment options available to Hoosiers, the state has maintained the reasonable cost of living found throughout the Midwest. In fact, Indiana’s cost of living is 14% lower than the national average. For nurses traveling in the state, there are two options for housing available; you may take advantage of company-paid housing, or receive per diems to find housing yourself.
