Why Richmond, Virginia, Is a Travel Nursing Hot Spot
Richmond, Virginia, may best be known for its links to the Civil War (the city has a lot to offer history buffs), but it’s also become a travel nursing hot spot. With a wide range of thing to do indoors and out between working shifts, Richmond has so much to offer new and experienced travelers.
Here are five reasons the Virginia state capital is quickly becoming a favorite destination for many travel RNs.
1. THE FOOD SCENE
For many travel nurses, this is the main attraction of Richmond: Virginia’s capital city has a fabulous food scene. In fact, Saveur magazine called it the “next great American food city,” and U.S. News Travel named it one of the world’s top 8 “Under-the-Radar Foodie Cities.” One of the best ways to begin exploring Richmond is to take a food tour, with multiple options available for visiting top restaurants as well as savoring samples of mouthwatering cuisine.
2. FUN AND EASY DAY TRIPS TO WASHINGTON, D.C.
Want to visit America’s capital? Washington, D.C. is an easy day trip from Richmond via Amtrak. Hop aboard for a 2-hour rail ride to take in some of the country’s most fascinating monuments, museums, and other attractions. The Smithsonian Institute is a must, made up of 17 separate museums and galleries with more than 137 million objects as the largest museum complex in the world, and nearly all are free to explore. You can also learn more about the nation’s government by visiting the Capitol Building or even touring the White House by booking in advance through your local member of congress.
3. MONUMENT AVENUE
History-lover or not, Monument Avenue is a must-experience for all types of travelers. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, take a stroll here and you’ll be able to check out some impressive monuments and gaze up at grand gilded age mansions that reflect the works of renowned architects. At the Virginia Center for Architecture, you’ll learn more about the interesting heritage behind Richmond’s stunning buildings.
4. THE VIRGINIA MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS
With more than 35,000 works of art from all corners of the globe, you’ll want to make multiple visits to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts during your Richmond travel nursing assignment. The collection showcases modern and contemporary art, art deco and art nouveau, and French impressionist and post-impressionist pieces. You’ll also find a sculpture garden and two eateries that provide an ideal break between your exploits, a casual café, and the upscale Amuse Restaurant. Guided tours and a range of educational programs are available as well.
5. THE EDGAR ALLAN POE MUSEUM
This museum is popular with both history and literature enthusiasts, celebrating the life and work of author Edgar Allan Poe as well as providing an overview of early 19th-century Richmond, the period when Poe lived and worked here. It showcases one of the most impressive collections of his letters, manuscripts, and various artifacts, with the museum’s founders collecting everything they could find related to the writer. It not only includes clothing and furniture, but a lock of his hair taken after his death in 1849.
