The State of Nursing According to Major Nursing Survey

Results from a major nursing survey conducted by AllNurses.com are in. The study surveyed over 18 thousand nurses from both the United States and Canada, giving us some insights to skim on the state of nursing. Here are some takeaways from the infographic, which you can see here:

On Gender:

• Over 92 percent of respondents (over 17 thousand nurses) were female, with just 7.74 percent males participating.

On Education:

• The majority of nurses have an ASN or a BSN. The remainder of nursing degrees were a mix of MSN, DNSc, DNP and PhD.

On Experience:

• Sixty one percent of responding nurses have less than 10 years of experience. Over 22 percent had five to 10 years of experience, making that the largest group

On Salary by Gender:

• Male nurses reported greater earnings than female nurses. The two categories were  nurses making up to $75 thousand a year and over. Sixty five percent of women respondents reported earnings up to $75 thousand compared to 56 percent of men, while 44 percent of males reported earnings of greater than $75 thousand compared to just 35 percent of women.

On Salary by State:

• Nurses reporter and average salary of $80 thousand in California, while nurses in South Dakota reported annual earnings of just $46,200.

• Home Health Nursing

• OR Nursing

Not covered in this survey were travel nurses, which is becoming a more prevalent choice among nurses looking to beef their compensation package. According to Indeed.com, postings for travel nurses have jumped from 13 percent to 18 percent last year.
