5 Reasons to Consider Michigan for Your Next Travel Nursing Job

When searching for your next travel nursing destination, there are a few things to consider. Not only do you want to work in a professional environment where you can grow your clinical skills and truly make an impact, but you also want to make sure you enjoy your time outside the facility.

With something for everyone, Michigan is a popular choice for many travel nurses. Below we highlight some well-known—and some of the more unique—things you can experience during your travel assignment in the Great Lakes State.

1. FOR THE OUTDOOR ADVENTURER

Michigan is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream-come-true all year round. Hike the woodlands, marvel at the waterfalls, or bike along mountain trails. Paddle through scenic canyons or try your hand at class IV whitewater rapids in Piers Gorge. Relax on the fresh-water beaches of the Great Lakes, climb ice formations at Hungarian Falls, or even give mushing a shot.

2. CONTINUING-EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

In Michigan, you can learn alongside the best and brightest. The 2017 U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor No. 11 (tied with Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland) for Nursing Master’s Degree programs (No. 15 for DNP). Consider a semester-long travel assignment and rack up the credits while you’re there.

3. STAY IN SOME OF AMERICA’S ‘BEST PLACES TO LIVE

If the metropolitan vibe is more of your thing, consider many of the communities around Detroit. Farmington Hills—a short drive northwest—was recently named to Money’s 100 Best Places to Live list, coming in at No. 51. Nearby Rochester Hills came in at No. 54 on that same list, which was assembled by looking at the median home price, number of clear-weather days per year, and average commute time, among other things.

4. FINOPHILES WELCOME

A lesser-known fact, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is home to the largest concentration of Finns outside of Europe. Upper Peninsula geography (glacially-formed lakes and woods full of pine and hardwoods) and climate (freezing-cold winters but mild summers filled with long days of sunshine) are not unlike those in Finland. 5. OH, CANADA!

Think hockey and maple syrup. From Michigan, Canada is just a bridge or tunnel away, giving you quick access to a completely different country while still working in the U.S. Along the Michigan border, America and Canada share celebrations and even an international marathon. For less than $500 (sometimes much less than $500) you can fly from Detroit to the very cosmopolitan Toronto, or, for a more European feel, to Montreal or Quebec.
